Blanchard Creek

The southern end of Possum Gorge segment of Cumberland Trail runs along and above Blanchard Creek. Today we decided to attempt a hike in and along the creek instead of on the trail. We were able to follow the creek almost to Bare Point where vertical rock bluffs forced us back up to the trail. We hiked the trail down to within a few hundred feet of Possum Creek Bridge where we left the trail again and bushwhacked along the base of the bluff back to the lower section of Blanchard Creek. The hike to the lower section of Blanchard Creek covered extremely rugged terrain but the extraordinary beauty made it all worthwhile.

  1. Great pics Don. I explored that area back during the summer. Two interesting things I found...1)East Blanchard Creek was flowing with water even though we were 4 weeks into the drought. Suspect it's run off from the old strip mining area on the opposite side of Hwy. 111?? 2)In the pic where you stated you turned around because it was too steep...right in that area is a tall bluff with a large roof/overhang that has fixed anchor bolts where someone did or does some rock climbing. --- JASON GRIZZRD
