Prentice Cooper

Soddy Daisy TTA members Lora Smith, Don Deakins, Carol Deakins, Jan Agee, Brandy Selman, and Danny McSpadden were joined by John Dever, Tracye Pool, Jahon Bandarrigi, and Manny Alcantara for a 5+ mile hike at Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. Precipitation which varied from light mist to light rain accompanied us from start to finish. Stops along the way included Indian Rock House, a lunch break during rain at Sulphur Branch Bridge where some hikers found shelter under a rock ledge and others under plastic draped over the bridge, and a final stop at Lawson Rock Overlook to enjoy the view which was obscured by fog and low hanging clouds. Since most scenic views were obstructed by clouds, a few people suggested we do this hike again soon so expect to see a repeat on the schedule in the near future.

Cloudland Canyon

Mark Jorden, Teresa Jordan, Lora Smith, Caroline Woerner, Jan Agee, Brandy Selman, George Bonneau, Sarah Bonneau, Malinda Keith, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins took a trip to Cloudland Canyon in Rising Fawn, Georgia today. This event, planned and led by Brandy, consisted of a hike along the 4.8 mile West Rim Loop Trail followed by a trip to the canyon floor for an up close visit to the creek and water falls that run through the gorge. An unexpected encounter with members of the Nashville Hiking Group provided a pleasant surprise along the way. The day ended with a visit to Cracker Barrel and plans to return to Cloudland Canyon and explore a new section of recently completed trail.

Virgin Falls

TTA members from across the state participated in today’s Virgin Falls hike lead by Jim and Marietta Poteet. Chapters represented were Memphis, Nashville, Columbia/Franklin, Highland Rim, Murfreesboro, Plateau, Soddy Daisy, and East Tennessee. Hikers from Soddy Daisy were Mark Jordan, Teresa Jordan, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins.

This was our first trip to Virgin Falls and we didn’t know what to expect. Reports rated the hike as moderate to the falls and strenuous on the return trip. I was skeptical and thought the reports might be slightly exaggerated but I have now confirmed the trail ratings were accurate. I'll not hike this trail again until I am in much better shape or until I am about 10 years younger.

Trail Maintenance

Lora Smith, George Bonneau, Wesley Jordan, Teresa Jordan, Caroline Woerner, Jan Agee, Brandy Selman, TC Varner, Carol Deakins and Don Deakins turned out for trail maintenance on our newly adopted section of trail between Hotwater Road and Deep Creek. We widened a short section of trail near Hotwater Road, raked leaves from trail between Hotwater Road and Posey Point, built a rock boarder along the trail at a switchback that is frequently missed, and removed all downed trees across the trail.

Laurel Falls

Seven members from Soddy Daisy Chapter, Ed Swanner, Sarah Bonneau, George Bonneau, Jan Agee, Brandy Selman, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins plus 5 members from Plateau Chapter made the trip to Laurel Falls in an attempt to obtain a quality photo of the falls for the Cumberland Trail website. Sub freezing temperatures combined with mist from falls created photo opportunities seldom available in this area.
