Little Possum Creek Bridge

Although CTC has been doing site prep work for over a week, today was the first day volunteers provided assistance. Soddy Daisy TTA members Matt Stullich, Nance Jo Ogozalek, Mark Jordan, Teresa Jordan, Mike White, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins worked at the bridge site while George Bonneau and Ed Swanner worked with the Nashville Hiking Group moving material from Retro Hughes Road to the construction site.

The first picture below shows felled timber being removed from creek to clear the way for scaffold erection. The second picture shows prep work for the foundation on south side of creek.

While this work was progressing, Brandy Selman, Jan Agee, and Judy Varner were at the church camp brewing up enough grub to feed 50 hungry people.

Rock Creek

Soddy Daisy TTA members Nance Jo Ogozalek, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins joined 24 hikers from Fairfield Glade and surrounding area for a 5+ mile Rock Creek hike from Retro Hughes Trailhead to Upper Leggett Road Trailhead. Highlights of the trip which was led by Karla Miller were a lunch break at Rock Creek Bridge, a tour of Rock Creek Campsite including the adjacent deep pool, and a stop at Rock Creek Overlook.

Laurel Falls

Soddy Daisy TTA members George Bonneau, Don Deakins, Carol Deakins, Mark Jordan, Teresa Jordan, Wesley Jordan, Rachel Jordan, Bob McGavock, and Nance Jo Ogozalek were joined by guest hiker Tabitha Boatswain for a hike to Laurel Falls on a day when weather conditions were near optimum. At the falls we paused for lunch and gave our digital cameras a good workout. Our day ended with a group photo and a 2.5 mile downhill hike back to Laurel-Snow trailhead.

Cooper Creek Maintenance

Although the weather forecast called for thunderstorms, 12 volunteers turned out for trail construction work in North Chickamauga Creek Gorge at Cooper Creek. Thunderstorms never materialized and other than a few sprinkles, we didn’t see any rain.

Our goal was to connect the recently completed Cooper Creek trail segment to Stevenson Branch campsite by constructing a short section of trail between the two. Instead of building to Cumberland Trail specifications, we only carved out a path so it would be obvious to hikers that the trail continues on past the campsite. A spring break-away event will finalize this section of trail.

Cooper Creek Inspection

Soddy Daisy TTA members Brandy Selman, Jan Agee, Judy Varner, Nance Jo Ogozalek, Bob McGavock, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins were joined by Carol Sheppard, a prospective new member; Larry Cook and Susan Bryant of North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy; and Tony Hook and Alex Schafer of Cumberland Trail Conference for an inspection tour of the new Cooper Creek trail segment in North Chickamauga Creek Gorge. There was concern the trail may have suffered some damage after recent heavy rains but no problems were found except for two trees across the trail.

Tony Hook hung flagging to mark the route of our upcoming trail construction project between Cooper Creek and Stevenson Branch Campsite. The work site is beautiful which should make this an enjoyable task. While working at this location, we will be surrounded by water so anyone that gets hot can cool off in one of three creeks; Stevenson Branch, Cooper Creek, or North Chickamauga Creek.

Work Day

Soddy Daisy TTA members Caroline Woerner, George Bonneau, Bob McGavock, Jan Agee, Brandy Selman, Nance Jo Ogozalek, and Don Deakins were joined by Carol Sheppard, a prospective new member, for a day of maintenance on our adopted section of Soddy Gorge trail between Hotwater Road and Deep Creek. We raked leaves from the trail, trimmed overhanging limbs, and removed a few downed trees. We had hoped to complete the segment between Posey Point and Deep Creek but it was too much for this small crew. One more work day will be required to complete our entire adopted section.

Rock Creek Loop

Caroline Woerner, Teresa Jordan, Mark Jordan, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins were joined by Jennifer Cox for an approximate 4 mile hike around Rock Creek Loop and a trip out to Leggett Point Overlook. Although we were prepared for a hike in rain, we only encountered a slight sprinkle at the trailhead. The entire hike was precipitation free and actually ended under sunny skies.

Jennifer and her husband (a SRO at Watts Bar Nuke Plant) are new to this area and are setting up permanent residence. We can expect to see their names on the Soddy Daisy TTA membership list.

Sunday Hike

A phone call from Jan Agee suggesting a short "Trail of Tires" hike on this rainy Sunday resulted in Carol and I grabbing our rain suits and heading out to the trailhead at Sluder Lane where we met Jan and Brandy. We were looking forward to hiking in the rain but as it turned out, rain suits were not needed. We hiked down to where the trail crosses Hotwater Road and back to Sluder Lane without much more than a few sprinkles. Although we only hiked about 2.25 miles, we did salvage an otherwise boring Sunday.
