Bridge Inspection

Our goal today was to verify reports that the temporary bridge over Big Soddy Creek had washed away during recent heavy rains. Upon arrival at the bridge site we discovered the bridge had broken loose on the north end but was still firmly secured on the south end and rather than crossing the creek, now parallels the creek. It appears to have suffered no other damage.

On our drive home we stopped at the point on Hotwater Road that caved in above Cumberland Trail. It appears that some debris from the slide made it to the trail and even more of the rip-rap used to make repairs rolled down onto the trail but had been removed. Only one big tree remains on the trail but can easily be stepped over.

McNabb Gulf

Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins incorporated about 1 mile of off-trail bushwhacking, 1.8 miles of Cumberland Trail, and 1.5 miles of jeep trail into today's Prentice Cooper hike. The bushwhacking segment where we used GPS for guidance was from Davis Pond to McNabb Gulf Campsite. From the campsite we hiked on Cumberland Trail to Raccoon Mountain Overlook where we stopped for lunch. After lunch we bushwhacked a short distance over to Lower Pot Point Road, a jeep trail that took us back to Davis Pond.

Rock Creek

Ava Navin, Bob DeHart, Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins took advantage of excellent hiking weather and repeated a hike we have done many times, Rock Creek Gorge. We met at Leggett Road upper trailhead, shuttled over to Retro Hughes Road trailhead, and made the 5.4 mile hike back to Leggett Road. Rock Creek Trail is in good condition except for one large Hemlock tree on the trail near Rock Creek Campsite which forces hikers way off trail to circumvent the obstruction. Maintenance crew needs to add this tree to their "To-Do" list.

Soddy Gorge with CHC

TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins joined a hard core group of Chattanooga Hiking Club members for an approximate 8.2 mile Soddy Gorge hike between SCC trailhead and the store on Jones Gap Road. Although rain was in the forecast and cancellation was considered, we grabbed our rain gear and continued with original plans. It was raining as we left the house and continued well into the hike but finally subsided. The remainder of the event was precipitation free which resulted in a group of hikers thankful we were not deterred by weather.
