Flipper Bend

Caroline Woerner, Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins spent Sunday at Flipper Bend hiking 10 of the 12 available miles. We left the 2 mile Clear Branch Loop for another day. Mother Nature treated us to another day of excellent weather and surprisingly, we only encountered one other hiker taking advantage of the spring like conditions. We will be watching for the next day suitable for hiking.

Rock Creek with CHC

A few members of Cumberland Trail Volunteers joined Chattanooga Hiking Club for a 7.5 mile hike on the Rock Creek segment of Cumberland Trail. A total of 38 hikers and many vehicles resulted in a slight logistics problem but we eventually got everyone to the Retro Hughes Trailhead, although slightly behind schedule. Weather was cold and sometimes accompanied by a little wind which resulted in an almost perfect day for hiking if dressed appropriately. Cumberland Trail Volunteers are looking forward to our next opportunity to hike with the hard core group known as Chattanooga Hiking Club.

Prentice Cooper Off-trail

Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins took advantage of today's cold weather while ticks and chiggers are still dormant and hiked off-trail using GPS for guidance. We began at the main trailhead in Prentice Cooper and hiked to a previously selected waypoint about 1.15 miles away as the crow flies. After completing the first leg, we set in coordinates of Indian Rockhouse and began the second leg which was 1.3 miles as the crow flies. Upon arrival at Indian Rockhouse, we stopped for lunch before hiking the third and final leg back to main trailhead.

Brady Mountain

Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins drove to Brady Mountain near Crossville and hiked the Brady Mountain segment of Cumberland Trail between Jewett Road and Highway 68. Total distance today was a little over 8 miles counting the 3 side trips to overlooks and 1 side trip to the plane crash site. The remains of the plane had been there for many years but they were not there today. Since it was mostly aluminum, I'm guessing someone has salvaged it for recycling.

Rock Creek Loop

Bob DeHart, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins took advantage of this spring like day and hiked the loop trail at Rock Creek. We were down to t-shirts by hike's end.

We noticed a few big trees down, probably a result of recent high winds, but fortunately none were on the trail. The loop trail is in excellent condition.

Piney River

Here's a video made during our January 29th hike on Piney River Trail near Spring City.
