Board Camp Creek

Caroline Woerner, Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins hiked the Board Camp Creek portion of Soddy Gorge Trail. We began at Jones Gap Road, hiked along highway 111 for about 1 mile, then followed the trail along Board Camp Creek to a point just beyond the recently rerouted section where we stopped for lunch. After an extended lunch break we retraced our steps back to Jones Gap Road for a total distance of about 7.6 miles.

Rock Creek Loop

Bob DeHart, Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins decided to get a little hiking in before the weekend rains arrived so off to Rock Creek we went. We maintained a very casual pace on this short 3 mile trek and made frequent stops to observe wildflowers. Weather couldn't have been more perfect. We are now ready for the rain.

Graysville Mtn with CHC

With rain and possible thunder storms in the forecast, Don and Carol Deakins along with Chattanooga Hiking Club headed to Graysville Mountain for a 7.8 mile hike. Our plans were to complete the hike before thunderstorms arrived while expecting to get caught in rain that was ahead of the storms. Things worked out as planned. After a short break at the end of Graysville Mountain Trail, we began making our way back to Roaring Creek Trailhead with plans to stop at Cranmore Cove Overlook for a lunch break. Distant thunder provided incentive to forego lunch and pick up the pace. With about 2.5 miles remaining, rain began to fall and continued to hike's end. Fortunately thunderstorms never came near Graysville Mountain.

Deep Creek Bridge

TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins hiked to Deep Creek to check out the first stage of construction on the permanent bridge across Deep Creek. The new bridge is being constructed about 50 or 60 feet downstream from where the trail presently crosses Deep Creek and provides a much more scenic view. After inspecting the new bridge site, we continued on to Big Soddy Creek. Fortunately we had no plans to cross Big Soddy Creek as it was flowing fast and deep which made crossing dangerous to impossible.

Possum Gorge with MTTA

Bob DeHart, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins joined members of Memphis TTA for the last day of their three day event on Cumberland Trail. Today's 5.4 mile hike to Perkins Point on the Possum Gorge segment began and ended at Heiss Mountain Road Trailhead. Perfect weather and good company made this a day I won't soon forget. A big thanks goes to the Memphis group for the invitation to hike with them.

Soddy Gorge with MTTA

The Memphis Chapter of Tennessee Trails Association is in Soddy Daisy for three days of hiking on Cumberland Trail. Carol and I joined them for today's 4.9 mile Soddy Gorge hike between Mowbray Pike and Sluder Lane. Their Saturday plans are Rock Creek beginning at Retro Hughes Road and hiking to Upper Leggett Road Trailhead the long way which means they will include the loop trail rather than taking the shortcut from Boiling Spring Bridge. Possum Gorge is planned for Sunday. They will begin at Heiss Mountain Road and hike to Perkins Point, then retrace their steps back to Heiss Mountain Road before beginning the long drive back to Memphis. Carol and I plan to join them again on Sunday.

Graysville Mtn

Jane Ellett, Ava Navin, Caroline Woerner, Bob DeHart, Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins hiked 8 miles on Graysville Mountain, half of which was on new trail constructed in March. We carried numerous GPS devices and two measuring wheels which were used to obtain accurate trails lengths and data for map construction. Weather was superb as was the group which made for a fun and productive day on the trail.
