Savage Gulf

Five hikers from our group accompanied six hikers from Murfreesboro TTA on a 7 mile trek at the Stone Door end of Savage Gulf. The first leg began at the Stone Door ranger station and took us to Stone Door where we enjoyed the overlooks and Stone Door. From there we hiked the Big Creek Rim Trail to Alum Gap Campsite where we stopped for lunch. The last leg on Laurel Trail took us back to our awaiting vehicles at ranger station.

Icy Possum Gorge

We took advantage of today's warmer temperature and hiked a portion of Possum Gorge. It hasn't been warm long enough to melt snow and ice on some parts of the trail which made for some treacherous sections where we had to inch along. Winter hiking sure is fun.

Rock Creek Loop

What better way to enjoy a cold Sunday morning and afternoon than with 40 year friends on a 3+ mile hike on Cumberland Trail's Rock Creek Loop. Harry Tirey, TC Varner, Judy Varner, and myself decided to squeeze in a little more hiking before rain, snow, and ice in the forecast forces us to stay home and off the roads. It won't keep us home long...we already have other plans in the works.

Big Soddy #7 Mine

Today Trish Appleton, Jane Ellett, Harry Tirey, TC Varner, Judy Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins explored a different section of Soddy Daisy's newly acquired Soddy Gorge property. We followed an old road to top of mountain where Big Soddy #7 Mine produced coal over 100 years ago. Our legs, hearts, and lungs got a pretty good workout as the climb was just a little more than anticipated. Exploring this new area was fun and maybe even educational since we got a glimpse into the past.

Soddy Gorge Bushwhacking

Another spring like day in February found this group in Soddy Gorge. Ava Navin, Harry Tirey, Pam Joyner, Don Harper, TC Varner, Judy Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins entered Soddy Gorge off Back Valley Road and hiked along Big Soddy Creek all the way to the Cumberland Trail bridge presently under construction and nearing completion. This route required lots of rock hopping and bushwhacking but made for a fun day. It was however tiring so our return trip took an easier route, the Cumberland Trail.

Panther Branch Overlook

Harry Tirey, Bob DeHart, TC Varner, Judy Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins took advantage of today's spring like weather and hiked near Cain Creek on the North Chickamauga Gorge section of Cumberland Trail. After parking at the Barker Camp parking area, we bushwhacked about 1.1 miles along the proposed route to the main trail. After reaching trail, we hiked about 1.3 miles to Panther Branch Overlook and took an extended break. Our return route included a stop at the unauthorized parking area near temporary end of trail above Cain Creek. Unfortunately it appears this lot is being used as a dump. From there we road walked one mile back to vehicles at Barker Camp parking lot.

Big Soddy Bridge

There was no activity at the bridge site today but main cables have been strung so progress is being made. I've been told the completion date is scheduled for end of February.
