Possum Gorge with MTTA

Seven local hikers joined six hikers from the Murfreesboro Chapter of Tennessee Trails and hiked the northern section of Possum Gorge Trail. We met at Retro Hughes Road Trailhead, then shuttled to the Little Possum Creek Bridge construction entrance where hike began. Our walk back to Retro Hughes Road Trailhead took us by Little Possum Creek Falls where we stopped for lunch. Unfortunately the flow in Little Possum Creek is extremely low which made for a unimpressive water fall but hiking with a fun group made for a great day on the trail.

Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge

TC Varner, Judy Varner, Bob DeHart, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins had the pleasure of enjoying what could be considered a perfect day. It was sunny and cool, ideal for hiking. We took advantage of the excellent conditions and walked all roads at the refuge, hoping to see a bald eagle but luck wasn't with us today. Except for vultures and osprey, wildlife was scarce, but perfect weather made it a day to remember.

Board Camp Creek Overnight

Jan Agee, Brandy Selman, TC Varner, and Don Deakins hiked into the Board Camp Creek area of Cumberland Trail and set up camp for the night. Judy Varner hiked in with us but had to leave and missed out on the joy of sleeping on the ground. Weather was perfect for backpacking and the tranquil setting made for a peaceful and enjoyable overnight event. But as usual, I think the best part is sitting around the campfire and conversation that ensues.

Newby Maintenance

Today Bob DeHart, Judy Varner, TC Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins spent 3 hours on the 1.1 mile section of Piney River Trail between Newby Branch and Duskin Creek. We did lots of work with pruners and hand saws. The Stihl chainsaw got plenty of use too. What this section of trail needs now is a treatment of agent orange; poison ivy abounds, especially along the lower section.

Sale Creek

We knocked cobwebs off our little boats and took them to Sale Creek along with fishing rods. Spent most of the morning in the swampy area where we saw many gar and carp in the shallows. A suggestion was made to paddle the swamp at night. Anyone interested?

Black Mountain

Harry Tirey, Bob DeHart, TC Varner, Judy Varner, Carol Deakins, and Don Deakins spent Sunday hiking the 3.6 mile Black Mountain Trail with side trips to Southern Overlook and Windless Cave. Wildflowers, perfect weather, and excellent company made for another superb day on the trail.

Big Soddy Bridge

TC and I hiked back to Big Soddy Creek Bridge. The anchors on north side of Big Soddy Creek have been re-positioned to correct location which means the final stages of bridge construction can now proceed. We might be able to cross this creek within a month.

Won't be long now until we can walk here
